Inspired by the monarch butterfly, Kristin Frank creates displays of their wings. Her Monarch Migration series ranges from vivid oil paintings and bold relief prints, to delicate watercolors. Just as nature uses color for attraction, this series has a similar magnetism, and uses color and shape to create movement across the surface. Viewed from afar, they represent the spectacle of overwintering monarchs; while viewed up close, they become simplified studies of color and structure.
She also works in watercolor to create meticulous renderings, which freeze the butterfly for timeless viewing. These studies mimic insect displays while honoring her fascination with scientific illustration, entomology, and the intricacies of the species.
Her other watercolor paintings include studies of subjects that interest her from sweet macarons and food illustrations to various aspects of nature such as birds, sea life, plants, and other insects. These paintings often use a white background to maintain focus on the details of the subject.
The naturalistic style, especially the works of John James Audubon, Beatrix Potter, and Emile-Allain Séguy, inspires her art.
Kristin earned her B.A. in studio art with a concentration in printmaking from the University of New Orleans. Her work can be found in private collections.
